In Context

At 46 mm it is a large watch — well above this catalogue’s 40 mm median, and enough to dominate a narrow wrist. At 15.95 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 200 m puts it in dive-watch territory, well past anything daily wear will ask of it.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 42 hours of reserve carries it overnight, but not through a weekend in a drawer. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

A2336035BA68760P stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a black dial with a stainless steel case.

The Caliber 23 is Breitling's Valjoux 7753, the version of the 7750 with the counters at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock rather than 6, 9 and 12. It powers 52 watches in this library. The 7753 rearranges the 7750's chronograph works so the subdials sit on the horizontal axis, the layout the 1960s chronographs used, and it moves the date correction to a pusher at 10 o'clock. Breitling's version is COSC-certified, runs at 28,800 vph with a 42-hour reserve and 27 jewels, and is offered with or without the 12-hour totaliser. The [7750 piece](/blog/the-valjoux-7750-family) explains the base. That tri-compax layout is why the library finds it in the retro lines: the Chronospace Automatic 46 accounts for 22 references, the [Superocean Heritage Chronograph 44](/brands/breitling/superocean-heritage) for 10, the Montbrillant for 7, the [Navitimer](/brands/breitling/navitimer) for 7 and the [Top Time](/brands/breitling/top-time) for 6, whose 1960s "Zorro" dial is drawn around exactly this counter arrangement. Cases run from 41 mm to 47 mm, with 46 mm the most common at 22 references. The [Caliber 13](/calibers/breitling-caliber-13) is the standard 7750 with the vertical counter layout, and the [Caliber 21](/calibers/breitling-caliber-21) the 7751 with a full calendar.

51 other watches in the library run the Breitling Caliber 23.
