In Context

At 45 mm it is a large watch — well above this catalogue’s 40 mm median, and enough to dominate a narrow wrist. At 15.73 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. Rated to 30 m, it is protected against rain and splashes and nothing beyond that.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 70 hours of reserve is enough to set it down on Friday evening and find it still running on Monday. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

AB031021/BF77/443X/A20BA.1 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a black dial with a stainless steel case.

The B03 is the B01 chronograph with a split-seconds hand, which stops to read an intermediate time while the first hand runs on. It powers 39 watches in this library, all Navitimer Rattrapantes. A rattrapante is the most demanding of the chronograph complications, because the two seconds hands must run together, separate on a press, and catch up on the next. Breitling built its version on the in-house [B01](/calibers/breitling-caliber-b01), keeping the column wheel, the vertical clutch and the 70-hour reserve, and added its own mechanism for isolating and re-engaging the split hand, which the company patented. The movement runs at 28,800 vph with 47 jewels and is COSC-certified. Every reference here is the [Navitimer Rattrapante](/brands/breitling/navitimer) of 2017, a 45 mm case in steel or red gold with the slide-rule bezel, 39 references in all, 12 of them limited editions. The [B04](/calibers/breitling-caliber-b04) and [B05](/calibers/breitling-caliber-b05) are the other B01 derivatives, with a second time zone and a world-time display, and the glossary defines the [chronograph](/glossary/chronograph) itself.

38 other watches in the library run the Breitling Caliber B03.
