In Context

At 29 mm it is small by current standards, in the range most wristwatches occupied before cases began growing through the 1990s. At 8.3 mm thick it is about average for a modern wristwatch. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the plexiglass crystal scratches easily but polishes back out at home, which sapphire does not. Rated to 30 m, it is protected against rain and splashes and nothing beyond that.

It is quartz, so it will hold time far more closely than any mechanical watch here, and asks for a battery every few years rather than a service.

IW3736-02 is one of 10 executions of the IW3736 base reference. Underneath they are the same watch; what separates this one is a white dial and a yellow gold case.

The base calibre of Jaeger-LeCoultre's mechaquartz family, supplied to IWC and used in the Kleine Da Vinci, reference 3736, in a 29 mm case. Quartz regulates the rate while a conventional mechanical module drives the chronograph, so the counters snap back on reset the way a mechanical chronograph does. IWC turned to the layout for small chronographs, where a fully mechanical calibre of the period would not fit.

9 other watches in the library run the IWC 630.
