In Context

At 43.1 mm it is a large watch — well above this catalogue’s 40 mm median, and enough to dominate a narrow wrist. At 14.4 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. Rated to 30 m, it is protected against rain and splashes and nothing beyond that.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 68 hours of reserve is enough to set it down on Friday evening and find it still running on Monday. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

IW3764-22 is one of 18 executions of the IW3764 base reference. Underneath they are the same watch; what separates this one is a black dial and a stainless steel case. Introduced in 2007. Beyond the time it carries a chronograph.

The 89361 is IWC's in-house flyback chronograph of the 89000 family, with the hour and minute counters combined in one subdial at 12 o'clock. It powers 63 watches in this library. The 89360 of 2007 was the first of the family, introduced in the tonneau Da Vinci Chronograph, and its combined counter is the idea: the elapsed hours and minutes are read as a time on a small dial, the way a clock is read, rather than from two separate registers. The flyback resets and restarts the chronograph on one press, and the pawl-winding system related to IWC's Pellaton mechanism winds a 68-hour reserve at 28,800 vph with 38 jewels. The 89361 adds a date at 3 o'clock. In the library it sits under 27 [Portugieser](/brands/iwc/portugieser) references, the Yacht Club and the Chronograph Classic, 15 [Ingenieur](/brands/iwc/ingenieur) chronographs of 2013, 14 [Pilot's Watches](/brands/iwc/pilot), including the Saint Exupéry editions and the Top Gun, 4 [Da Vincis](/brands/iwc/da-vinci) and 3 GST Aquatimers. Cases run from 42 mm to 46 mm, with 44 mm and 45.5 mm the most common. 25 are limited editions. The [69375](/calibers/iwc-69375) is the smaller in-house chronograph below it, and the [79320](/calibers/iwc-79320) the Valjoux-based movement both replaced.

62 other watches in the library run the IWC 89361.
