In Context

At 40.9 mm it is sized to the current mainstream: 40 mm is the median across every watch measured in this catalogue. At 12.3 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. Rated to 30 m, it is protected against rain and splashes and nothing beyond that.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 44 hours of reserve carries it overnight, but not through a weekend in a drawer. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

IW3714-82 is one of 60 executions of the IW3714 base reference. Underneath they are the same watch; what separates this one is a grey dial and a red gold case. Introduced in 2012.

The 79350 is IWC's Valjoux 7750 for the Portugieser Chronograph, rebuilt without the day and date windows so the dial could keep the 1939 design. It powers 74 watches in this library. IWC takes the 7750 base and finishes, regulates and partly re-engineers it; the [7750 piece](/blog/the-valjoux-7750-family) explains what the base gives it. The 79350 removes the small seconds and the calendar, leaving a chronograph with a 30-minute counter at 12 o'clock and running seconds at 6, and runs at 28,800 vph with a 44-hour reserve and 31 jewels at 30 mm across. It succeeded the 79240 around 2007 with a changed finish and no other difference, and the in-house [69355](/calibers/iwc-69355) replaced it in the Portugieser Chronograph in 2020. In the library it powers 66 [Portugieser](/brands/iwc/portugieser) Chronograph 3714 references, in a 40.9 mm case that was for years IWC's best-selling watch, 5 [Portofinos](/brands/iwc/portofino) and 3 [Ingenieurs](/brands/iwc/ingenieur). 19 references are limited editions. The [79320](/calibers/iwc-79320) is the same base with its day and date in the Pilot's Chronograph, and the [76240](/calibers/iwc-76240) the hand-wound split-seconds version in the Portugieser Chrono-Rattrapante.

73 other watches in the library run the IWC 79350.
