In Context

At 29 mm it is small by current standards, in the range most wristwatches occupied before cases began growing through the 1990s. At 12.2 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 50 m covers rain and hand-washing comfortably; it is not a watch to swim in.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 50 hours of reserve is enough to set it down on Friday evening and find it still running on Monday. At 25,200 vph the seconds hand advances 7 times a second.

131.20.29.20.53.001 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It carries a blue dial.

The 8700 is Omega's Master Chronometer movement for the smallest cases, introduced with the Constellation Manhattan of 2018 for the 27 mm and 29 mm models. It powers 62 watches in this library. It brings the full Master Chronometer specification down to a ladies' size: the co-axial escapement, a free-sprung balance with a silicon balance spring, resistance to 15,000 gauss certified by METAS, bidirectional winding and a 50-hour reserve at 25,200 vph, with a rhodium finish and arabesque Geneva waves. The [8701](/calibers/omega-8701) is the same movement with an 18-carat Sedna gold rotor and balance bridge for the gold-cased models. Every reference here is a [Constellation](/brands/omega/constellation): 58 in the 29 mm Manhattan case and 4 in the 27 mm, in steel, Sedna gold and two-tone, many with diamond bezels. It replaced the [8521](/calibers/omega-8521) and [8520](/calibers/omega-8520) in the smallest Constellations, and the [8800](/calibers/omega-8800) is its counterpart in the 34 mm to 42 mm cases.

61 other watches in the library run the Omega 8700.
