In Context

At 41.5 mm it is sized to the current mainstream: 40 mm is the median across every watch measured in this catalogue. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 300 m is a professional diving rating, far past any demand a wrist is likely to make of it.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 44 hours of reserve carries it overnight, but not through a weekend in a drawer. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

2196.20.00 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a silver dial with a yellow gold case. Beyond the time it carries a chronograph.

The 1164 is Omega's Valjoux 7750, the automatic chronograph of the Seamaster Diver 300M and the Speedmaster Date through the 1990s and 2000s. It powers 31 watches in this library. It is the 7750 with Omega's finishing and rhodium plating: a cam-actuated chronograph with a horizontal clutch, the counters at 6, 9 and 12 o'clock and a date at 3, running at 28,800 vph with a 44-hour reserve and 25 jewels, at 30 mm across and 7.9 mm high. The [7750 piece](/blog/the-valjoux-7750-family) explains the base and its reputation for service. The Piguet-based [3304](/calibers/omega-3304) replaced it in the Speedmaster Date around 2009. In the library it powers 18 [Seamaster Diver 300M](/brands/omega/seamaster-diver-300m) chronographs at 41.5 mm, including the America's Cup editions, and 13 [Speedmaster](/brands/omega/speedmaster-automatic-quartz) Date models at 40 mm. The [1152](/calibers/omega-1152) and [1151](/calibers/omega-1151) are the same family's other versions, the second with a day and date, and the [3330](/calibers/omega-3330) the column-wheel chronograph that took over the smaller Speedmasters.

30 other watches in the library run the Omega 1164.
