In Context

At 42 mm it is sized to the current mainstream: 40 mm is the median across every watch measured in this catalogue. At 10.5 mm thick it is about average for a modern wristwatch. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. Rated to 30 m, it is protected against rain and splashes and nothing beyond that.

The movement is hand-wound, so winding it becomes part of the day rather than something the watch does for you. 72 hours of reserve puts it well past a weekend — several days off the wrist and it is still going. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

PAM00676 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a black sunburst dial with a stainless steel case. Introduced in 2016.

Inside: Caliber P.1000

The P.1000 is a in-house hand-wound calibre with a power reserve of three days, launched in 2015. The movement has the fundamental functions – hours, minutes and the seconds counter at 9 o’clock – and it is 12 lignes (26.8 mm) in diameter with an overall thickness of 3.85 mm. Consisting of 152 components and with 21 jewels, the P.1000 calibre is solid, strong and reliable, and it is immediately recognisable as a Panerai calibre from both the technical and aesthetic points of view. To ensure maximum security and stability, the balance is held by a bridge with two supports, fixed by screws with threaded rings for micrometer adjustment of the height. The oscillation frequency is 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour). With the small seconds dial at 9 o’clock – another of the distinctive characteristics of many contemporary Panerai watches, directly descended from the historic models – the new movement also contains the device which stops the balance and zeroes the seconds hand (seconds reset) when setting the time, for perfect synchronization of the watch with the reference signal.

6 other watches in the library run the Panerai P.1000.
