In Context

At 44 mm it is a large watch — well above this catalogue’s 40 mm median, and enough to dominate a narrow wrist. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 100 m is genuine swimming resistance — more than the shape of this watch suggests it would need.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 46 hours of reserve carries it overnight, but not through a weekend in a drawer. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

PAM00162 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a black dial with a stainless steel case.

Inside: Caliber OP XII

The OP XII is Panerai's Valjoux 7753, the chronograph with its counters at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock, finished and certified by the COSC. It powers 27 watches in this library. The 7753 rearranges the 7750's counters to the horizontal axis and moves the date correction to a pusher, and the [7750 piece](/blog/the-valjoux-7750-family) explains the base's cam-actuated chronograph. Panerai's version runs at 28,800 vph with a 46-hour reserve and 27 jewels at 30 mm across, and it carried the Luminor Chrono and the Luminor Chrono Daylight through the 2000s before the in-house [P.9100](/calibers/panerai-p-9100) arrived in 2013. In the library it powers 13 [Luminor](/brands/panerai/luminor) references, most of them Chrono Daylight boutique editions, 7 [Ferrari](/brands/panerai/ferrari) chronographs, 4 [Submersibles](/brands/panerai/submersible) and 3 [Radiomirs](/brands/panerai/radiomir). Cases run from 40 mm to 47 mm, with 44 mm and 45 mm the most common. 9 are limited editions. The [OP III](/calibers/panerai-op-iii) is the 7750 with its chronograph removed, the time-only automatic of the same years, and the [OP VIII](/calibers/panerai-op-viii) the other Valjoux-based chronograph in the range.

26 other watches in the library run the Panerai OP XII.
