In Context

At 47 mm this is exceptionally large for something worn on a wrist, closer to a pocket watch given lugs. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 100 m is genuine swimming resistance — more than the shape of this watch suggests it would need.

The movement is hand-wound, so winding it becomes part of the day rather than something the watch does for you. 72 hours of reserve puts it well past a weekend — several days off the wrist and it is still going. At 21,600 vph the seconds hand advances 6 times a second, the slower and more audible rate of an older design.

PAM00604 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a black sunburst dial with a stainless steel case. It was a limited edition. Introduced in 2015.

The P.3000 is Panerai's large hand-wound three-day movement, 16½ lignes across to fill the 47 mm case the historical Radiomir was built around. It powers 37 watches in this library. Its construction imitates a three-quarter-plate pocket movement: one large bridge and one smaller cover most of the works, fixed to the plate by thick screws, which makes the movement rigid and gives a display back something to look at. Two barrels in series hold 72 hours, the balance beats at 21,600 vph, and the movement has 21 jewels at 36.6 mm across. The hour hand jumps in one-hour steps from the crown, so a traveller resets it without disturbing the minutes. In the library it powers 17 [Radiomir](/brands/panerai/radiomir) references, 10 [Radiomir 1940s](/brands/panerai/radiomir-1940) and 10 [Luminor 1950s](/brands/panerai/luminor-1950), including the Luminor California with its Californian dial; 35 of the 37 are 47 mm. 23 are limited editions. The [P.5000](/calibers/panerai-p-5000) is the eight-day hand-wound movement of the same family in the 44 mm Luminor, and the [P.6000](/calibers/panerai-p-6000) the smaller three-day hand-wound movement that succeeded the Unitas-based calibers.

36 other watches in the library run the Panerai P.3000.
