In Context

At 36 mm it is classically proportioned: the size a dress watch was understood to be for most of the twentieth century, and small enough to sit under a cuff. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 100 m is genuine swimming resistance — more than the shape of this watch suggests it would need.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 48 hours of reserve is enough to set it down on Friday evening and find it still running on Monday. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

118348-0150 is one of 58 executions of the 118348 base reference. Underneath they are the same watch; what separates this one is a white dial and a yellow gold case. Beyond the time it carries a day-date.

The 3155 is the Day-Date movement of 1988 to 2019: the 3135 architecture with a day disc beside the date, both quick-set from the crown. It powers 445 watches in this library, every one a 36 mm Day-Date. The double quick-set was its advance over the [3055](/calibers/rolex-3055) it replaced, which set the date quickly but not the day. It is 28.5 mm across with 31 jewels, a 48-hour reserve and a beat of 28,800 vph, and later examples carry the blue Parachrom hairspring. Every one is a COSC chronometer, and from 2015 a Superlative Chronometer tested again after casing. In the library it is the movement of the six-digit [Day-Date 36](/brands/rolex/day-date), the 118xxx references: the diamond-set 118388 and 118348 and the fluted 118238 and 118208 are the largest families, in yellow, white and Everose gold and platinum. The [3255](/calibers/rolex-3255) replaced it in the 36 mm case in 2019, four years after it debuted in the Day-Date 40; the [3135-to-3235 piece](/blog/rolex-3135-to-3235-what-changed) explains the escapement and reserve the new generation brought. The [3135](/calibers/rolex-3135) is the same base with a date alone, and the [3156](/calibers/rolex-3156) the version with Paraflex shock absorbers that powered the Day-Date II.

444 other watches in the library run the Rolex 3155.
