In Context

At 40 mm it is sized to the current mainstream: 40 mm is the median across every watch measured in this catalogue. At 12.4 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 100 m is genuine swimming resistance — more than the shape of this watch suggests it would need.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 54 hours of reserve is enough to set it down on Friday evening and find it still running on Monday. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

16559saco stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a yellow dial with a white gold case. Introduced in 1999. Beyond the time it carries a chronograph.

The Zenith El Primero 400 as reworked by Rolex for the first automatic Daytona, reference 16520, from 1988 to 2000. Roughly half the parts were replaced. The beat rate came down from 36,000 to 28,800 to ease wear and lengthen service intervals, and Rolex fitted its own free-sprung Glucydur balance with Microstella nuts, plus a Breguet overcoil in place of the flat hairspring.

1 other watch in the library runs the Rolex 4030.
