In Context

At 37 mm it sits just under the modern norm — the band that suits the widest spread of wrists. At 9.8 mm thick it is about average for a modern wristwatch. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 50 m covers rain and hand-washing comfortably; it is not a watch to swim in.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 60 hours of reserve is enough to set it down on Friday evening and find it still running on Monday. At 21,600 vph the seconds hand advances 6 times a second, the slower and more audible rate of an older design.

15452BC.ZZ.D019CR.01 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a paved dial with a white gold case.

The 3120 is the in-house automatic that carried the Royal Oak from 2003 until 2019. It has 280 parts, a 22-carat gold rotor on ceramic ball bearings and a 60-hour reserve. It powers 111 watches in this library. It was Audemars Piguet's first self-winding movement designed and built entirely in-house for series production, and it set the pattern for what followed: a full-size rotor rather than the micro-rotor of the ultra-thin calibers, a beat of 21,600 vph, 40 jewels and a 26.6 mm diameter at 4.26 mm high. The Royal Oak 15300 of 2005 at 39 mm and the 15400 of 2012 at 41 mm both ran it, and it served as the base for the [3126/3840](/calibers/audemars-piguet-ap-3126-3840) Offshore chronograph and the [3132](/calibers/audemars-piguet-ap-3132) double-balance openworked movement. In the library it sits under 61 [Royal Oak](/brands/audemars-piguet/royal-oak) references, 21 [Royal Oak Offshore](/brands/audemars-piguet/royal-oak-offshore) Divers, 17 [Jules Audemars](/brands/audemars-piguet/jules-audemars) and 12 Millenarys. Cases run from 36 mm to 47 mm, with 37 mm, 39 mm and 42 mm the most common. 21 are limited editions. The [4302](/calibers/audemars-piguet-ap-4302) replaced it in the 41 mm Royal Oak in 2019, and the [5900](/calibers/audemars-piguet-ap-5900) in the 37 mm in 2022.

110 other watches in the library run the Audemars Piguet AP 3120.
