Audemars PiguetRoyal Oak

The Royal Oak is the 1972 Gérald Genta design that made a steel sports watch a luxury object. Its octagonal bezel is held by eight hexagonal screws, its bracelet is integrated, and its dial is stamped with the "tapisserie" pattern. This library holds 653 references.

About the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

The first reference, the 5402ST "Jumbo", was 39 mm and 7 mm thick, built on the ultra-thin caliber 2121, and priced like a gold watch when steel dive watches cost a tenth as much. Sales were slow at first; then it reorganised the industry. Every Royal Oak since keeps the bezel, the bracelet that narrows toward the clasp, and the stamped tapisserie dial in its petite, grande or mega variants.

The size ladder runs from 23 mm quartz ladies' models to 44 mm, with 41 mm the most common at 260 references, 39 mm at 117 and 37 mm at 97. The movements track that ladder. The 41 mm Selfwinding used the caliber 3120 from 2012 and the 4302 from 2019; the 37 mm moved to the 5900 and the 34 mm to the 5800 in 2022. The Chronograph carried the 2385, the collection's most common movement at 77 references, until the in-house flyback 4401 replaced it in 2021. The quartz 2713 powers 38 of the 33 mm ladies' models.

Complications are more common here than in any other steel sports line: 149 chronographs, 88 tourbillons and 60 perpetual calendars, the last led by the ultra-thin 5134 in the 41 mm 26574. Materials are more evenly spread than the steel reputation suggests: pink gold is the largest group at 167 references, steel second at 160, then white gold, yellow gold, platinum and titanium. Blue dials lead at 162, and 75 references are openworked. 146 of the 653 are limited editions.

The Royal Oak Offshore is the larger 1993 derivative, the Royal Oak Concept the experimental one, and CODE 11.59 the round alternative.
