In Context

At 51 mm this is exceptionally large for something worn on a wrist, closer to a pocket watch given lugs. At 21.6 mm it is very tall, and sits high off the wrist. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 50 m covers rain and hand-washing comfortably; it is not a watch to swim in.

It is quartz, so it will hold time far more closely than any mechanical watch here, and asks for a battery every few years rather than a service.

E76325A4/I520/156S/E20DSA.4 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a yellow dial with a titanium case.

The B76 is the SuperQuartz movement of the Emergency II, the watch that carries a distress beacon. It is a thermocompensated analogue-digital caliber with two liquid-crystal displays, certified by the COSC. It powers 27 watches in this library, every one a 51 mm Emergency II. The movement shows the time by hands and the rest on two displays, a 12-hour or 24-hour digital time, a chronograph, an alarm, a countdown, a second time zone and a calendar, with an end-of-life indicator for the battery. The beacon beside it is a separate system: a personal locator transmitting on the 406 MHz satellite frequency and the 121.5 MHz homing frequency through two antennas unscrewed from the case, powered by a rechargeable battery of its own. In the library it powers all 27 [Emergency II](/brands/breitling/emergency) references, in titanium and the blackened Night Mission editions, with black, yellow, orange and blue dials. 4 are limited editions. The [Caliber 56](/calibers/breitling-caliber-56) is the movement of the original 43 mm Emergency of 1995, and the [Caliber 79](/calibers/breitling-caliber-79) and [B50](/calibers/breitling-caliber-b50) the SuperQuartz multifunction movements without the beacon.

26 other watches in the library run the Breitling Caliber B76.
