In Context

At 43 mm it is a large watch — well above this catalogue’s 40 mm median, and enough to dominate a narrow wrist. At 14.1 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. Rated to 30 m, it is protected against rain and splashes and nothing beyond that.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 42 hours of reserve carries it overnight, but not through a weekend in a drawer. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

A2133012G518 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a silver dial with a stainless steel case.

The Caliber 21 is Breitling's Valjoux 7751, the full-calendar version of the 7750, with the moon phase removed. It powers 34 watches in this library, 33 of them the Montbrillant Datora. The 7751 adds a day, a month and a pointer date to the 7750's chronograph, all read from the dial: the day and month in windows at 12 o'clock and the date by a central hand. Breitling's version leaves out the moon phase the base provides and keeps the rest, at 28,800 vph with a 42-hour reserve and 25 jewels, and certifies it with the COSC. The [7750 piece](/blog/the-valjoux-7750-family) explains the base. In the library it is the movement of the Montbrillant Datora, a 43 mm chronograph of the 2000s named for the Montbrillant factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds where Breitling made watches from 1892, 33 references, plus one [Navitimer](/brands/breitling/navitimer) at 46 mm. The 43 mm case accounts for 33 of the 34. The [Caliber 13](/calibers/breitling-caliber-13) is the plain 7750 with a date, and the [Caliber 23](/calibers/breitling-caliber-23) the 7753 with the horizontal counter layout.

33 other watches in the library run the Breitling Caliber 21.
