In Context

At 48 mm this is exceptionally large for something worn on a wrist, closer to a pocket watch given lugs. At 14.5 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 60 m covers rain and hand-washing comfortably; it is not a watch to swim in.

The movement is hand-wound, so winding it becomes part of the day rather than something the watch does for you. 192 hours of reserve puts it well past a weekend — several days off the wrist and it is still going. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

IW5103-01 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a black dial with a titanium case. It was a limited edition.

A revision of the 59210 in which the power-reserve indicator moves off the dial and onto the back of the movement, leaving the Portugieser Hand-Wound Eight Days an uninterrupted front. The mainspring holds closer to nine days, but a stop releases exactly 192 hours of it, so the watch never runs on the weak end of the torque curve. Free-sprung balance and Breguet hairspring carry over unchanged.

9 other watches in the library run the IWC 59215.
