In Context

At 41.5 mm it is sized to the current mainstream: 40 mm is the median across every watch measured in this catalogue. At 16 mm it is very tall, and sits high off the wrist. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the plexiglass crystal scratches easily but polishes back out at home, which sapphire does not. Rated to 30 m, it is protected against rain and splashes and nothing beyond that.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 44 hours of reserve carries it overnight, but not through a weekend in a drawer. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

IW9272-03 is one of 4 executions of the IW9272 base reference. Underneath they are the same watch; what separates this one is a silver dial and a rose gold case.

The 79251 is the Kurt Klaus perpetual calendar with a split-seconds chronograph added: the movement of the Da Vinci Perpetual Rattrapante of 1995. It powers 42 watches in this library, all Da Vincis. It combines two of IWC's Valjoux 7750 developments on one base. The calendar module is Klaus's from the [79261](/calibers/iwc-79261), which sets every indication forward from the crown and needs no correctors; the rattrapante is Richard Habring's from the [79230](/calibers/iwc-79230), a lever-and-cam split-seconds mechanism that could be built at a production price. Together they make a perpetual calendar, moon phase, four-digit year and split-seconds chronograph on a movement with 43 jewels and a 44-hour reserve. The [7750 piece](/blog/the-valjoux-7750-family) explains the base under both. Every reference here is a [Da Vinci](/brands/iwc/da-vinci): the ref 3751 in platinum, yellow gold and rose gold, 26 in the 39 mm case and 16 at 41.5 mm. 12 are limited editions, and the glossary defines the [perpetual calendar](/glossary/perpetual-calendar).

41 other watches in the library run the IWC 79251.
