In Context

At 39 mm it sits just under the modern norm — the band that suits the widest spread of wrists. At 12.5 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 60 m covers rain and hand-washing comfortably; it is not a watch to swim in.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 42 hours of reserve carries it overnight, but not through a weekend in a drawer. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

IW3251-03 is one of 12 executions of the IW3251 base reference. Underneath they are the same watch; what separates this one is a platinum case. It was a limited edition. Introduced in 1998.

Part of IWC's 3752 series, all of it built on the ETA 2892-A2, and used in the Pilot's Watch UTC. A 24-hour hand set independently of the main hands reads a second zone, and the local hour can be moved forward or back without disturbing the running of the movement — the arrangement a pilot crossing time zones actually needs.

2 other watches in the library run the IWC 37526.
