IWCPilot

IWC's Pilot's Watches descend from the 1936 Special Pilot's Watch and the 1948 Mark 11 made for the Royal Air Force. This library holds 344 references of the Mark series, the Pilot's Chronograph, the Spitfire and Top Gun editions and the Doppelchronograph.

About the IWC Pilot

The Mark 11 set the type: a black dial with white numerals, a triangle at 12 o'clock, and a soft-iron inner case shielding the movement from magnetic fields. It remained in service into the 1980s, and IWC revived the design as the Mark XII in 1994, followed by the XV, XVI, XVII and XVIII and the 2022 Mark XX. The Pilot's Chronograph of 1994 put the same dial on a Valjoux 7750, and the Top Gun of 2007 moved the line into ceramic and titanium.

The most common movement is the caliber 79230, the split-seconds chronograph of the Doppelchronograph, in 88 references; the ref 3713 alone accounts for 50 of them and its 3711 predecessor for 28. The 79320 drives the Pilot's Chronograph 3717, the 69385 and 69380 the in-house chronographs of the 2019 relaunch, and the 30110 and 35111 the Mark XVI through Mark XVIII three-handers. The 32111 of the Mark XX brought a five-day reserve to the entry model in 2022. Chronographs make up 165 of the 344 references.

Sizes run from 28 mm to 46 mm, but 42 mm is the most common at 93 references and 43 mm the next at 43. Steel accounts for 208 cases, the Top Gun's titanium and ceramic for 33 more, and black dials for 166. Water resistance is 60 m on 302 references and 100 m on the rest. 103 of the references are limited editions, many of them the Spitfire, Le Petit Prince and Saint Exupéry series.

The Big Pilot is the 46 mm seven-day sibling, and the Portugieser shares the 79320 and 89361 movements.
