In Context

At 40.9 mm it is sized to the current mainstream: 40 mm is the median across every watch measured in this catalogue. At 12.3 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. Rated to 30 m, it is protected against rain and splashes and nothing beyond that.

The movement is hand-wound, so winding it becomes part of the day rather than something the watch does for you. 44 hours of reserve carries it overnight, but not through a weekend in a drawer. At 21,600 vph the seconds hand advances 6 times a second, the slower and more audible rate of an older design.

IW3712-03 is one of 21 executions of the IW3712 base reference. Underneath they are the same watch; what separates this one is a silver dial and a rose gold case.

The 76240 is the hand-wound split-seconds chronograph of the Portugieser Chrono-Rattrapante of 1995. It is the Valjoux 7760 base with Richard Habring's rattrapante mechanism. It powers 23 watches in this library, every one a Chrono-Rattrapante. The 7760 is the hand-wound version of the 7750, and Habring's module, first seen in the Pilot's Doppelchronograph of 1992, adds a second chronograph seconds hand that stops for an intermediate time and catches up on the next press, with a lever-and-cam construction that made the complication affordable. The movement has 31 jewels, a 44-hour reserve and a beat of 21,600 vph at 30 mm across. The [7750 piece](/blog/the-valjoux-7750-family) explains the base, and the glossary defines the [rattrapante](/glossary/rattrapante). In the library it powers 23 [Portugieser](/brands/iwc/portugieser) ref 3712 references, in steel, rose gold and platinum at 40.9 mm; 16 are limited editions. The [79350](/calibers/iwc-79350) is the automatic Valjoux-based chronograph of the Portugieser 3714 in the same case, and the [79230](/calibers/iwc-79230) the automatic split-seconds of the Pilot's line.

22 other watches in the library run the IWC 76240.
