In Context

At 35 mm it is classically proportioned: the size a dress watch was understood to be for most of the twentieth century, and small enough to sit under a cuff. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the plexiglass crystal scratches easily but polishes back out at home, which sapphire does not.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 50 hours of reserve is enough to set it down on Friday evening and find it still running on Monday.

ST 168.0018 is one of 16 executions of the ST base reference. Underneath they are the same watch; what separates this one is a silver dial and a stainless steel case.

The chronometer-grade automatic of the 1960s Constellation, with a quickset date worked by pushing the crown rather than cycling the hands through midnight. Mainplate and bridges are copper-plated beryllium bronze. Every example was submitted for official chronometer certification, which is what the observatory medallion on the caseback of these watches refers to.
