In Context
At 44 mm it is a large watch — well above this catalogue’s 40 mm median, and enough to dominate a narrow wrist. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 100 m is genuine swimming resistance — more than the shape of this watch suggests it would need.
The movement is hand-wound, so winding it becomes part of the day rather than something the watch does for you. 192 hours of reserve puts it well past a weekend — several days off the wrist and it is still going. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.
PAM00737 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a green dial with a titanium case. Introduced in 2008. Beyond the time it carries a gmt.
Inside: Caliber P.2004
Explore this caliber →The P.2004 calibre is the first chronograph movement created entirely by the Panerai Manufacture, an expression of the quality of the mechanical tradition applied to sports watches. The P.2004 calibre is a hand-wound mechanical movement with a power reserve of 8 days. It is a single-button column wheel chronograph which combines the start/stop/ reset functions in a single push-piece. This push-piece is positioned at 8 o’clock in order to maintain the unmistakable appearance of Luminor watches, with the bridge protecting the winding crown, a distinctive feature of the design of Luminor cases. Its position also allows the most immediate control of the operations of the chronograph when making time measurements. The chronograph seconds hand is at the centre with the 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, enabling the measurements themselves to be clearly read. But the heart of the movement consists of the sophisticated system for controlling the chronograph functions: the column wheel, a characteristic feature of high-quality chronographs, ensures the greatest precision in starting, stopping and resetting the chronograph hands. It is also equipped with the GMT function. The case back of the Panerai Luminor 1950 8 Days Chrono Monopulsante GMT reveals the structure of the movement with its separate bridges, their brushed finish with chamfered edges and the polished screws. It is available with a brushed steel, titanium or ceramic case. The movement was updated to feature 30 jewels in 2018.
4 other watches in the library run the Panerai P.2004.
