In Context

At 44 mm it is a large watch — well above this catalogue’s 40 mm median, and enough to dominate a narrow wrist. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 300 m is a professional diving rating, far past any demand a wrist is likely to make of it.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 72 hours of reserve puts it well past a weekend — several days off the wrist and it is still going. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

PAM00858 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a silver dial with a stainless steel case. It was a limited edition.

The P.9000 is the first three-day automatic Panerai designed itself, introduced in 2009 for the Luminor 1950. It is the movement that made the 44 mm Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days Automatic the collection's centre. It powers 41 watches in this library. Two barrels give a 72-hour reserve, a one-piece rotor winds in both directions through a ratchet, the balance has adjusting screws rather than a regulator, and the beat is 28,800 vph, with 28 jewels at 13¾ lignes. It is 7.9 mm high, which the 44 mm and 47 mm cases absorbed, and it was built to be recognisable through a display back with its two large bridges. In the library it powers 29 [Luminor 1950](/brands/panerai/luminor-1950) references, including the Sealand editions with their engraved covers, 10 [Submersibles](/brands/panerai/submersible) and 2 [Radiomirs](/brands/panerai/radiomir). The 44 mm case accounts for 26 references and the 47 mm for 9. 21 are limited editions. The [P.9010](/calibers/panerai-p-9010) replaced it in 2016, slimmer and with a jumping hour hand, and the [P.9001](/calibers/panerai-p-9001) is the version with a second time zone and a power reserve indicator.

40 other watches in the library run the Panerai P.9000.
