In Context

At 42 mm it is sized to the current mainstream: 40 mm is the median across every watch measured in this catalogue. At 13.2 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 300 m is a professional diving rating, far past any demand a wrist is likely to make of it.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 72 hours of reserve puts it well past a weekend — several days off the wrist and it is still going. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

PAM01523 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a white dial with a stainless steel case.

The P.9010 is Panerai's three-day automatic of 2016, the slimmer successor to the P.9000 and the movement of the 44 mm Luminor 1950 and Submersible. It powers 65 watches in this library. It keeps the P.9000's architecture, two barrels for 72 hours, a rotor winding in both directions and a beat of 28,800 vph, and changes three things: the balance is held by a bridge fixed at both ends rather than a cock, the height drops to 6 mm, and the hour hand can be jumped forward or back in one-hour steps from the crown without stopping the minutes, with the date following, which is what a traveller wants. It has 31 jewels and 200 components, with a small seconds at 9 o'clock and a date at 3. In the library it powers 44 [Luminor 1950](/brands/panerai/luminor-1950) references, including the Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days Automatic, and 21 [Submersibles](/brands/panerai/submersible), the Bronzo among them. The 44 mm case accounts for 38 references, the 47 mm for 19 and the 42 mm for 8. 18 are limited editions. The [P.9000](/calibers/panerai-p-9000) is the 2009 movement it replaced, the [P.900](/calibers/panerai-p-900) the thinner automatic for the 40 mm and 42 mm cases, and the [P.9100](/calibers/panerai-p-9100) the flyback chronograph built on the same base.

64 other watches in the library run the Panerai P.9010.
