In Context
At 47 mm this is exceptionally large for something worn on a wrist, closer to a pocket watch given lugs. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the plexiglass crystal scratches easily but polishes back out at home, which sapphire does not. 100 m is genuine swimming resistance — more than the shape of this watch suggests it would need.
The movement is hand-wound, so winding it becomes part of the day rather than something the watch does for you. 56 hours of reserve is enough to set it down on Friday evening and find it still running on Monday. At 21,600 vph the seconds hand advances 6 times a second, the slower and more audible rate of an older design.
PAM00249 stands on its own in this catalogue — no other reference here shares its base number. It pairs a black dial with a stainless steel case. It was a limited edition. Introduced in 1938.
Inside: Caliber OP X
Explore this caliber →Panerai's designation for an ETA/Unitas 6497 execution with the company's own bridge layout and a swan's-neck regulator for fine adjustment. It runs the Radiomir Black Seal and related hand-wound models. The near-identical OP XI sits beside it in the range, built on the later 6497-2 and sent through chronometer certification, which the OP X was not.
13 other watches in the library run the Panerai OP X.
