Patek PhilippeCalatrava

The Calatrava is Patek Philippe's round dress watch, named for the cross the company adopted as its emblem in 1887 and defined by the ref 96 of 1932. This library holds 193 references, and 133 of them run the caliber 240.

About the Patek Philippe Calatrava

The ref 96 arrived the year the Stern family took over the company, and its proportions, a plain round case with straight lugs and a flat bezel, have anchored the catalogue since. The hobnail guilloché bezel of the 3919 carried the name through the 1980s and 1990s, and the 5119, 5196, 5227 with its hinged officer's caseback, and the 6119 of 2021 are the current heirs. The 5226 of 2022 brought a textured dial and a 40 mm case.

What the library shows is where the Calatrava name is used most: the Rare Handcrafts references. The 5089G, an enamel and wood-marquetry Calatrava produced in small annual series, is the largest family here at 45 references, and the 5077 and 5177 cloisonné enamel models add 49 more. That is why 59 dials are recorded as multi-coloured and why the rarity median for the collection is 10, the highest in this library. All of them run the caliber 240, the ultra-thin micro-rotor movement whose family is covered in the 240 piece; it is the reason the median case is 8.2 mm thick.

The hand-wound 215 PS of the 5119 and 5196 powers 17 references, the automatic 324 S C of the 5227 and 5296 16, and the 30-255 PS of the 6119 3. Sizes run from 31 mm to 42 mm, with 37 mm at 67 references and 38.6 mm at 50. White gold accounts for 111 cases, platinum and rose gold for 31 each, and 7 references are steel. 92 are limited editions, and 120 have a display back.

Complications holds the annual calendars and chronographs above it, the Gondolo the shaped cases, and the Golden Ellipse the 1968 alternative.
