In Context

At 38 mm it sits just under the modern norm — the band that suits the widest spread of wrists. At 8.43 mm thick it is about average for a modern wristwatch. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. Rated to 30 m, it is protected against rain and splashes and nothing beyond that.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 45 hours of reserve carries it overnight, but not through a weekend in a drawer. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

5296G-017 is one of 2 executions of the 5296G base reference. Underneath they are the same watch; what separates this one is a grey dial and a white gold case.

The 5296G family

5296G-017 is one of 2 variants sharing the 5296G base reference — same watch underneath, different dial, bezel, or bracelet execution. Browse the others:

The 324 S C is Patek Philippe's full-rotor automatic with central seconds and date, the movement of the Nautilus 5711 and the Calatrava 5227. It powers 68 watches in this library. It descends from the 315 of the 1990s and was introduced around 2004, with 213 parts, 29 jewels, a 21-carat gold central rotor, a Gyromax balance and a beat of 28,800 vph for a 45-hour reserve, at 27 mm across and 3.3 mm high. From the late 2000s it received the Spiromax silicon balance spring, and since 2009 it has carried the Patek Philippe Seal in place of the Geneva Seal. It is the maison's everyday automatic, as the micro-rotor [240](/calibers/patek-philippe-240) is its thin one; the [240 piece](/blog/patek-philippe-caliber-240) explains that division. In the library it sits under 31 [Nautilus](/brands/patek-philippe/nautilus) references, the 5711 and the 7118 ladies' model, 16 [Calatravas](/brands/patek-philippe/calatrava), the 5227 with its hinged caseback and the 5296, 14 [Aquanauts](/brands/patek-philippe/aquanaut), the 5167 and 5168, and 7 [Twenty~4](/brands/patek-philippe/twenty-4) Automatics. The 40 mm case accounts for 21 references and the 35.2 mm Nautilus for 10. Five are limited editions. The 26-330 S C of 2019 is its successor, with a stop-seconds function and an anti-backlash reduction wheel, and the [324 S QA LU](/calibers/patek-philippe-324-s-qa-lu) is the annual calendar built on the same base.

67 other watches in the library run the Patek Philippe 324 S C.
