RolexDay-Date 40

The Day-Date 40 is the 2015 Day-Date: a 40 mm case and the caliber 3255, the first of Rolex's current generation of movements. This library holds 142 references, all on the same caliber.

About the Rolex Day-Date 40

It replaced the 41 mm Day-Date II of 2008, whose proportions Rolex reconsidered, and it launched the caliber 3255 with fourteen patents, the Chronergy escapement, a 70-hour reserve and the Superlative Chronometer standard of two seconds a day. The 3135-to-3235 piece covers that architecture, which the 36 mm Day-Date received four years later. Like every Day-Date, it is made only in gold and platinum, on the President bracelet with ceramic inserts inside the links.

Platinum is the most common material here at 49 references, ahead of yellow gold at 46, white gold at 28 and Everose at 19. The 16 base references pair each metal with a smooth, fluted or diamond-set bezel: the 228238 in yellow gold, the 228348RBR with its diamond bezel, and the 228206 and 228236 in platinum, the second with the fluted platinum bezel introduced in 2022, each hold 15 variants. The dials carry the rest of the variety, from the laser-etched motifs and ombré finishes of the launch to the ice-blue that Rolex reserves for platinum; silver, black, blue, white, grey and green each appear more than ten times. Every reference is rated to 100 m.

The Day-Date 36 is the 1956 original size, and the Day-Date II the 41 mm it replaced.
