In Context

At 41 mm it is sized to the current mainstream: 40 mm is the median across every watch measured in this catalogue. At 11.21 mm thick it is about average for a modern wristwatch. The case back is open, so the movement is visible without taking the watch apart, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. Rated to 30 m, it is protected against rain and splashes and nothing beyond that.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 80 hours of reserve puts it well past a weekend — several days off the wrist and it is still going. At 18,000 vph the seconds hand advances 5 times a second, the slower and more audible rate of an older design.

6040T/000R-B960 is one of 3 executions of the 6040T/000R base reference. Underneath they are the same watch; what separates this one is a silver guilloche dial and a pink gold case. It was a limited edition. Beyond the time it carries a tourbillon.

Caliber 2160 is the first self-winding movement developed by Vacheron Constantin. In addition to the elegance of its openworked carriage shaped like a Maltese cross, the emblem of the Manufacture, Caliber 2160 is distinguished by its incredible slimness: this ultra-thin 188-part movement endowed with an approximately 80-hour power reserve measures just 5.65 mm thick. Its relatively sedate frequency (2.5 Hz), along with its 22K gold peripheral oscillating weight, provide a chance to admire the steady beating of its mechanism and the exceptional level of traditional finishing visible through the sapphire crystal caseback. The bar of the tourbillon carriage is entirely hand-bevelled, a craftsmanship operation that takes almost 12 hours for this component alone.
