CartierTank

The Tank is the rectangular watch Louis Cartier designed in 1917. Its case was drawn from the tracks and turret of the tanks then arriving on the Western Front. This library holds 40 references, every one rectangular.

About the Cartier Tank

The vertical bars of the case, the brancards, run into the strap; the dial carries Roman numerals, a rail track and blued sword hands; the crown holds a sapphire cabochon. Cartier has varied it for a century: the Tank Louis Cartier of 1922 with its rounded brancards, the Tank Cintrée curved to the wrist, the Tank Américaine of 1989, the Tank Française of 1996 on a bracelet, the Tank Anglaise of 2012 with the crown set into the case, the Tank MC of 2013 with the in-house automatic, and the Tank Must of 2021, which revived the 1970s name with quartz and solar-powered movements.

The movements follow the models. The hand-wound 1917 MC of the Tank Louis Cartier powers 9 references, the automatic 049 8, the in-house 1904-PS MC of the Tank MC 6 and its chronograph version the 1904-CH MC 3, and 10 references are quartz. 19 references are automatic, 11 hand-wound and 10 quartz.

The Tank's sizes are widths: the 25.5 mm Louis Cartier is the most common at 11 references, the 34.3 mm MC at 9, the 22 mm small models at 7, and the 29.8 mm Anglaise and 31 mm at 5 each. Steel is the material of 18 cases, with yellow, pink and rose gold at 6 or 7 each. Silver dials account for 29. Water resistance is 30 m, and the median case is 6.8 mm thick, among the thinnest in this library. 22 references have a mineral crystal, the quartz Must models, and 18 sapphire.

The Ballon Bleu is the round Cartier beside it, the Santos the earlier square one, and the Calibre de Cartier shares the 1904-PS MC.
