In Context

At 40 mm it is sized to the current mainstream: 40 mm is the median across every watch measured in this catalogue. At 12 mm it is a tall case, and it will catch on a cuff. The case back is closed, so the movement stays out of sight, and the sapphire crystal will resist everything short of deliberate abuse. 100 m is genuine swimming resistance — more than the shape of this watch suggests it would need.

The movement winds itself from the motion of your wrist. 48 hours of reserve is enough to set it down on Friday evening and find it still running on Monday. At 28,800 vph the seconds hand advances 8 times a second.

116622-0001 is one of 3 executions of the 116622 base reference. Underneath they are the same watch; what separates this one is a blue dial and a platinum, stainless steel case. Introduced in 1992.

The 116622 family

The 3135 is the Rolex workhorse of 1988 to 2018. It is the automatic with a date that powered the Datejust 36, the Submariner Date and the Sea-Dweller for thirty years. It powers 421 watches in this library. It is 28.5 mm across and 6 mm high with 31 jewels, a 48-hour reserve and a beat of 28,800 vph, and its full balance bridge, anchored on both sides, is the reason it is regarded as the most robust Rolex movement of its era. The blue Parachrom hairspring, a niobium-zirconium alloy insensitive to magnetism, arrived in the mid-2000s. Every one is a COSC chronometer. The [3235](/calibers/rolex-3235) succeeded it from 2015, and the [3135-to-3235 piece](/blog/rolex-3135-to-3235-what-changed) sets out what the new generation changed and what it kept. In the library it powers 351 [Datejust 36](/brands/rolex/datejust) references, the six-digit 116xxx generation, 39 [Submariners](/brands/rolex/submariner), the 16610 and 116610 generations, 14 of the 34 mm Date, 10 [Sea-Dwellers](/brands/rolex/sea-dweller) and 7 [Yacht-Masters](/brands/rolex/yacht-master). Cases run from 34 mm to 44 mm, with 36 mm at 351 references and 40 mm at 54. The [3130](/calibers/rolex-3130) is the same movement without the date, the [3155](/calibers/rolex-3155) the Day-Date version, and the [3186](/calibers/rolex-3186) the GMT derivative.

420 other watches in the library run the Rolex 3135.
