The Rolex 2236: The Most Common Movement in This Library
907 watches here run one 20 mm Rolex movement most enthusiasts have never looked at. It was also the first Rolex caliber with a silicon hairspring, nine years before a larger one got the same.
Ask which movement appears most often in this library and the answer is not a Submariner's, a Daytona's or a Datejust 36's. It is the caliber 2236, a 20 mm automatic that sits in the 28 mm Lady-Datejust and the 31 mm Datejust 31, in 907 watches. The Breitling B01 is second at 861, and the 2236's own predecessor, the 2235, is third at 733.
That is 1,640 watches on two small Rolex movements that the enthusiast press rarely mentions. They deserve the attention, because the 2236 carries a piece of technology the men's calibers still do not.
What it is
The 2236 is a self-winding movement with a date, 20 mm across with 31 jewels, beating at 28,800 vph with a 55-hour reserve. Rolex introduced it in 2014 in the Pearlmaster 34, and it has since replaced the 2235 across the smaller Oyster cases. Like every current Rolex caliber it is a Superlative Chronometer: certified by the COSC as a bare movement, then tested again by Rolex after casing to a tolerance of two seconds a day.
The 2235 it replaced is the same idea from the turn of the century: the same 20 mm footprint and 31 jewels, a 48-hour reserve, and a conventional hairspring. In this library the 2235 is still the movement of the six-digit Datejust 31 references, 682 of them, and of 29 of the old 26 mm Lady-Datejusts.
Syloxi
What makes the 2236 worth a reference piece is its hairspring. Rolex's larger movements use Parachrom, a niobium-zirconium alloy spring the company introduced in 2000. The 2236 was the first Rolex caliber to use Syloxi, a hairspring made of silicon.
Silicon does two things a metal spring cannot. It is unaffected by magnetic fields, so the watch does not gain or lose time after a brush with a handbag clasp or a laptop. And it can be etched into a shape no coiling machine could produce: the Syloxi spring's coils are not evenly spaced but patterned, with a geometry Rolex patented, so the spring breathes concentrically in every position. A silicon oxide layer compensates for temperature. Rolex claims it is up to ten times more precise than a traditional hairspring under shock, and pairs it with Paraflex shock absorbers.
The larger calibers did not follow. The 3235 of 2015 and the rest of the 32xx family, whose changes the 3135-to-3235 piece sets out, kept Parachrom and gained the Chronergy escapement instead. It was nine years before Syloxi appeared in a men's Rolex movement, the caliber 7140 of the Perpetual 1908 in 2023. For most of a decade the smallest Rolex movements were the only ones with a silicon spring.
Where it sits in this library
| Collection | Case | Watches on the 2236 | Watches on the 2235 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Datejust 31 | 31 mm | 488 | 682 |
| Lady-Datejust | 28 mm (26 mm on the 2235) | 399 | 29 |
| Pearlmaster | 29 mm and 34 mm | 15 | 19 |
| Yacht-Master | 37 mm | 5 | 3 |
The split between the two calibers is a calendar. The Lady-Datejust took the 2236 in 2015, when its case grew from 26 mm to 28 mm and its reference numbers moved from 1791xx to 2791xx. The Datejust 31 followed in 2020, from 1782xx to 2782xx. So a Datejust 31 with a six-digit reference is a 2235 and a seven-digit one is a 2236, a rule the reference-number guide covers, and the Lady-Datejust made the same move five years earlier.
The no-date siblings
Rolex builds the small movement in a family, as it does the large one. The 2232 is the 2236 without a date, introduced in 2020 for the Oyster Perpetual 28, 31 and 34, and it powers 35 watches here; the 2231 was the 2235's no-date equivalent. The pattern mirrors the 3235 and its no-date 3230, and it means the entire current Rolex range below 36 mm runs on one architecture, in the way the range above it runs on the 32xx.
What to make of the 55 hours
The 2236's reserve is 55 hours against the 70 of the 3235. The gap is size: a 20 mm movement has room for a smaller barrel, and Rolex chose to spend the Syloxi spring's efficiency on precision rather than on stretching the reserve. In practice 55 hours covers a weekend off the wrist, which is what the figure is for.
The 2236's own page lists every watch here that carries it, and the Datejust 31 and Lady-Datejust pages show how the two calibers divide each collection.
