RolexDatejust 31

The Datejust 31 is the mid-size Datejust: a 31 mm Oyster case between the 28 mm Lady-Datejust and the 36 mm original. It is the largest single collection in this library, at 1,171 references.

About the Rolex Datejust 31

The size has existed since the 1980s, when Rolex began offering the Datejust in a "medium" case for wrists that found 36 mm too large and 26 mm too small. What defines it has not changed: an Oyster case rated to 100 m, a screw-down Twinlock crown, the date under a Cyclops lens at 3 o'clock, and a choice of Jubilee, Oyster or President bracelets. Everything else is configuration, which is why the collection runs so wide.

Two generations account for almost all of it. The six-digit references (178xxx) carry the caliber 2235, which powers 682 of the 1,171 watches here. The current 278xxx generation, introduced in 2020, moved to the caliber 2236, a movement first seen in 2014 and notable for its silicon Syloxi hairspring. The 2236 sits in 488 references, and the split between the two is the quickest way to date a Datejust 31 from its number alone; the reference-number guide explains the Rolex convention.

Materials follow the Rolex pattern. Solid yellow gold is the single largest group at 232 references, but the three Rolesor pairings of steel with white, yellow or Everose gold together make up 577, so a steel-based watch is the more typical Datejust 31. Fluted, domed and diamond-set bezels multiply each case into a family of dials: white, silver, black, champagne, grey and pink each appear more than a hundred times. The 45 base references gather those combinations, and the largest families (178384, 178274 and 178344) each hold over fifty variants. The variant guide explains how those families are built.

The same Oyster, one size down, is the Lady-Datejust; one size up is the Datejust 36.
