RolexDatejust 36

The Datejust is the watch Rolex built its catalogue around, the first self-winding wristwatch with a date window, launched in 1945. It marked the company's fortieth anniversary. This collection is the 36 mm original size, and the library holds 519 references of it.

About the Rolex Datejust 36

The Jubilee bracelet was designed for it the same year, the Cyclops lens over the date arrived in the early 1950s, and the fluted bezel, originally a functional feature of screwing the bezel to the case, became its signature. The generations are read from the reference number, as the reference guide explains: four digits through the 1970s, five from the late 1970s, six with the 116xxx of 2005 that redesigned the lugs and bracelet, and the current 126xxx of 2018.

That last change is a movement change. The caliber 3135, Rolex's workhorse since 1988, powers 351 of the 519 watches here, all six-digit references. The 3235, with the Chronergy escapement and a 70-hour reserve, powers the other 168. The two are compared in detail in the 3135-to-3235 piece.

Rolesor, Rolex's word for steel with gold, is the Datejust 36's natural state: 153 references pair steel with a white gold bezel, 148 with yellow gold and 102 with Everose. Only 44 are plain steel, and 32 are solid gold. The 26 base references expand through bezel, bracelet and dial into families of up to 53 variants; the 116234, 116203, 116233 and 116244 are the largest. Silver, black, white, champagne, pink and grey dials each appear more than forty times.

The same watch in other sizes: the Datejust 31, the Datejust 41, the Lady-Datejust at 28 mm, and the Datejust II that preceded the 41.
